Finding The Origin Of Your Pain

March 24, 2014

In today’s on the go, fast paced lifestyle, inevitably, we will become injured or experience sore or stiff muscles. As winter is slowly exiting Maine, we might have fallen on the ice, possibly fell skiing, shoveled a little too often, or worked out a little too hard after being house bound with all the snow. Regardless, there is no reason to live in pain. As humans, we are unique in our own individual biology, physiology, and anatomy. For this reason, pain is also unique and should be dealt with at its source. These are the 2 guiding principles of Chiropractic Healing Arts Center and ARPwave Therapy Clinic of Maine.

ARPwave (accelerated Recovery Performance) is a system built upon the premise that painful physical symptoms have neurological origins. When the nervous system develops a dysfunctional pattern, as a result of trauma or poor movement patterns, a muscular imbalance develops, resulting in pain and decreased movement. ARPwave’s bioelectric current works to re-program your nervous system while RAPIDLY strengthening muscles as you perform specific therapeutic exercises. This system is the only modality of its kind approved by the FDA and covered by most insurance plans.

The advantage of Chiropractic and ARPwave therapy is its natural, multifaceted approach to pain relief and functional restoration. Instead of invasive surgery, or drugs to temporarily relieve symptoms, chiropractors use gentle, safe manipulative maneuvers, combined with specific exercises and physiotherapy that provide effective, long term results in treating a wide range of ailments.

JOINT PAIN OR FAILURE IS NEUROLOGICAL IN ORIGIN

ARP wave Therapy works off the simple premise that joint pain stems from muscles around the joint being unable to absorb forces due to imbalance in strength or stimulation. Joints are designed, for example, to rotate a knee, hip, shoulder, or spine, not to support impact to those areas. Muscles need to support the forces and absorb any impact, protecting the joint from injury. Most muscular and joint pain occurs when muscles are not receiving proper signals due to neurological breakdowns. This breakdown forces other muscles to compensate for them. This leads to breakdown in balance, inflammation and injury. The result of the application of this current, augmented with specific exercises, is rapid pain reduction. A study was done by Mercola and Kirsch, “The Basis for Microcurrent Electrical Therapy in Conventional Medical Practice”, which shows this application also reduces inflammation, edema and swelling, while increasing range of motion, strength, and muscle relaxation. All of which accelerate wound healing.

SPORTS and ACTIVITIES

In sports and activities, muscles must turn on and off to create and absorb the force of impact. When the muscles perform correctly and in balance, no injury occurs. When a muscle is tired, strained or inflamed, they can no longer withstand the impact and an injury occurs.

Example: A runner is in constant calf pain. After receiving many treatments, i.e. massage, heat, ice, PT, etc. to the calf, the patient has only experienced short term relief. What if the calf wasn’t the origin of the pain but simply a symptom? What if the quad or hamstring was not firing properly? This would cause the calf to be supporting too much of the impact, overworking it and causing it to be in pain. Get the quad and hamstring to fire properly, supporting the impact, thus ending the calf pain. The ARP wave treatment identifies and treats the true cause of the calf pain. Notice we did not treat the calf, which was just a symptom.

You may often hear friends or family saying, “my joints hurt because I’ve been running for so long the joint is shot.” Or, “my joints hurt because I’m getting old.” However, the more likely reason for chronic shoulder, knee or hip pain is because the muscles around the joint aren’t supporting that joint by taking the impact they are designed to absorb. Instead that load is put on the joint. Get the muscles to neurologically fire properly, supporting the joint and the pain is removed.

The more difficult problem with tennis and golf, however, is that the required movements build more muscles on one side, the serving or swing side, than the other. This imbalance pulls unevenly on our spine and extremities, causing repeated forceful contractions of the muscles on one side of the body versus the other. This may result in microscopic tears that lead to inflammation. Examples of this are tennis elbow, golfers elbow, and rotator cuff syndrome, as well as back and neck pain.

Weekend Warriors

Today more than 1000 professional (NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, PGA Tour & Tennis) and Olympian athletes, including; Dwight Freeney, Blake Griffen, Randy Johnson, Tim Thomas, Arron Oberhouser, Peter Jacobson and Novak Djokovic are using ARPwave therapy to get back in the game faster.

Unlike professional athletes, we work at different occupations throughout the week and deserve to enjoy the quality of life we work hard to preserve. Whether it’s running, cycling, hiking, tennis, golf, swimming, or simply yard work or home repairs, when we get hurt, we want to return to our passion as quickly as possible, just like the pros. Chiropractic care and the APRwave protocol recovers your body, reduces inflammation, swelling and increases range of motion very quickly.

Coaches & Trainers

If you are a coach or trainer of a high school, college or university team, the same ARPwave protocols used by the pros can be incorporated into your athletes at any level. These protocols will allow the athlete to be in balance helping to vastly increase performance while helping to avoid injury. With our POV programs, we can work with athletes at our facility or arrange to be on the field or in your training facility to improve your athlete’s performance.

We have worked with local teams participating in tournaments, where muscles typically do not have the time to recover or minor injuries to heal. Our combined programs of extremely fast recovery and neurological muscle balancing have allowed athletes to safely and effectively continue to compete.

Personal Experience

“After seven knee surgeries, including total reconstruction (I tore every ligament and cartilage in my left knee) almost forty years ago, I was left with no cartilage in my left knee and been living bone on bone since. I was a candidate for knee replacement. As time passed, day-to-day pain continued to increase. Enjoying my passion, which is golf, became impossible due to the excessive swelling and pain. My usage of pain meds and over the counter pain relievers alarmed many doctors. In addition, I could not exercise or strengthen my leg to increase the stability required to live without the fear of falling.

After being introduced to Dr. Dunphy, Chiropractic Healing Arts Center and the Maine ARPwave Clinic, my life changed. I went through the ARPwave program and after the third session, I had full range of motion in my knee, for the first time in over thirty years, and no pain. Today, over four months later, I have not consumed one pain killer or over the counter reliever. As we progressed through the therapy, I began to realize I was walking up and down stairs with the stability and strength I had not had for thirty years. After completing the balance phase of the therapy, I live with the freedom of knowing I have a strong and stable leg under my body.

Little did I realize that now with a stable leg, the back problems I experienced for years dissipated by 95 percent. I’m back exercising, doing lunges and squats without pain or swelling and now can enjoy my workouts. Oh, and I’m sixty years old and I can’t wait to golf this summer!    I, along with many others treated this winter are looking forward to the thawing snow, knowing we are now able get out and enjoy the life that I had resolved to thinking was lost forever.” Steve Menhennitt

Regardless if you experienced a recent or past accident, fall or injury, or if you have been living with chronic discomfort for years, ARPwave therapy can identify and treat the source of the injury.
